The bodies of 63 miners have been discovered after a massive gas explosion occurred in Luling coal mine at around 4pm on 13 May 2003.

The State Administration of Work Safety reported that there were some 113 miners working in the mine when the blast occurred.

A further 27 or 28 miners have been rescued and ten of them are in hospital with injuries sustained in the blast. According to reports, local officials have stated that they do not believe there is little chance of finding the remaining miners alive. Reports state that there are some 17 to 23 miners still unaccounted for.

Reports suggest that a team of some 40 or 50 people is at the coal mine helping in the rescue efforts.

A local official reported that the miners were working 500 meters to 600 meters (1,600 to 2,000 ft) below the surface when the explosion occurred.

The Luling coal mine is a large scale mine which employs in total some 5 to 6,000 workers.
