At around 6.40pm on 9 May 2004, a coalmine collapse occurred at the Futong Coalmine in Qujing City, in northern Guangdong Province. Two miners and their supervisor were buried inside the pit with little chance of survival. One miner managed to escape in time.
Starting on 21 April 2004, workers at the “Stella” and “Selena” production facilities of the Xinxiong Shoe Factory in Dalingshan Town in Dongguan city, Guangdong province, held a strike in protest at new overtime policies announced by the factory management.

[Broadcast on 29 April 2004] From 21 to 23 April, a workers-management dispute broke out in Xinxiong Shoe Factory, in Dalingshan Town of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province. According to a statement drawn by the factory management, the workers “destroyed factory property worth US$350,000”. Yet, an official from the Dalingshan Town Government pointed out such a statement was irresponsible in his interview with CLB.

Since 1984, when the Regulations on Permanent Residence Registration were loosened, millions of Chinese rural residents have migrated to the urban areas in search of employment. This trend is increasing, as the income gap between the rural and urban areas grows ever larger.
Attached below is a short selection of some relevant news clippings from the Chinese media over the past 12 months which highlight some cases of discrimination against female workers and reveal the concern felt within China over the problems relating to sexual discrimination, lack of equality for women in the workforce, working conditions and the plight of the rural population.
From 1 to 3 December, more than 800 teachers, mainly community teachers , gathered in front of the municipal government offices in Leizhou, Guangdong.

China labour Bulletin has learned that several retired workers from the Maoming Branch of the Sinopec Corporation have been facing harassment from the local Public Security Bureau for their part in massive protests over pensions in January 2004.
