5 June 2002 [By Trini Leung, researcher / writer on politics and labour movements in China] Introduction
While retrenched oilfield workers have staged their 13th week of protests against the Daqing Petroleum Administration Bureau , the police continued their arrests of the protest leaders.
A five-member mission sent by the Paris-based International Labour Solidarity Alliance to extend their solidarity and concern for the struggle waged by workers in Liaoyang city in the northeastern province of Liaoning has been turned back by the Chinese government.
On 15 May 2002, several hundred workers from the Ferroalloy Factory again assembled in front of government buildings to raise banners and peacefully petition the government for the release of detainees. At just after 10 am, more than ten plain-clothes police officers charged out of the government building's courtyard, attacked the workers with punches and kicks and seized their banners.
Over 10,000 oilfield workers in Daqing have continued their daily demonstrations against retrenchment for the eighth consecutive week at the Tieren (Iron Man) Square.
China Labour Bulletin has received reports that the four leaders of the month-long protest by the Liaoyang Ferroalloy Factory workers, who were arrested in mid-March, would be prosecuted by the government.
