One of China's best known labour rights activists is in Australia to address the annual meeting of the Australian Workers' Union.

Han Dongfang helped set up China's first independent trade union, the Beijing Autonomous Workers' Federation, during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

When he was expelled to Hong Kong in 1993 he started up the China Labour Bulletin.

For many years, China's unions have been controlled by the Government and have offered little real hope for Chinese workers.

But that began to change just a few years ago.

Presenter: Liam Cochrane

Speaker: Han Dongfang, founder and director of China Labour Bulletin
